Verizon Heritage
The Verizon Heritage has been played on the renowned Harbour Town Golf Links since its inception in 1969 and is the only PGA Tour event in South Carolina. It is recognized as one of the premier golf tournaments in the country and many pros count it as one of their favorite places to play. Charles Fraser, the developer of Sea Pines, wanted to pay homage to South Carolina’s role in bringing golf to America. Knowing that the nation’s first golf club, the South Carolina Golf Club, was built in 1786 at Harleston Green in Charleston, Charles Fraser aspired to honor its heritage and recognize the historic relationship between golf in Scotland and South Carolina. He asked Jack Nicklaus, and then-unknown architect Pete Dye, to create a course in the tradition of the classic links courses of Scotland. Thus was born the Harbour Town Golf Links with short fairways, pot bunkers and small greens that are reminiscent of the great golf courses of Scotland.
